FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

A photography session shouldn't feel like something you or your pet need to perform for. Here are some of the questions I'm often asked before a shoot.

Woman sitting with her dog in woodland

My dog won't sit still. Is that a problem?

Not at all. In fact, I don't expect them to.

Some dogs love posing for the camera. Others would much rather explore, sniff, play or investigate everything around them. I work with your dog as they are, allowing plenty of time for them to settle into the session.

Often, the photographs that show their personality best happen in between the moments you might think we're trying to capture.

Does my dog need to be well trained?

No. Your dog doesn't need a perfect recall, an impressive sit-stay or impeccable manners to have beautiful photographs.

Sessions are adapted to suit the individual dog. If they need to stay on a lead, that's absolutely fine. Safety and your dog's comfort will always come before getting a photograph.

My dog is nervous or reactive. Can we still have a session?

Usually, yes.

Please tell me about your dog's needs when you enquire so we can choose an appropriate location and plan the session around them. We can look for quieter spaces, allow more distance from other dogs and people, and give them as much time as they need.

There is never any pressure to force an interaction or pose that your dog isn't comfortable with.

Can I be in the photographs too?

Absolutely, and I'd encourage it.

The relationship between people and their animals is one of my favourite things to photograph. You don't need to feel comfortable in front of a camera or know how to pose. I'll give you gentle direction when it's useful, but I'm equally interested in the natural moments between you.

Can more than one pet be included?

Yes. Let me know who's coming when you enquire so I can plan the session appropriately.

Photographing several animals together can require a little more patience, but they certainly don't all need to sit perfectly beside one another for the entire shoot.

Do you offer equine photography?

Yes. I offer equine photography across Cheshire, South Birmingham and surrounding areas, from individual equine portraits to photographs capturing the relationship between horses and their owners.

Sessions can include traditional portraits, natural and candid moments, ridden photographs and images of you and your horse together. I particularly enjoy capturing the individual character of an animal and the relationship they have with their person.

Sessions can take place at your own yard or another suitable location, depending on the photographs you'd like to create.

I also provide photography and videography for equestrian competitions, horse shows and other equine events.

Should I bathe or groom my pet before the session?

It depends on the animal.

For horses, I'd recommend giving them a thorough groom before the session. A clean coat, brushed mane and tail, and any tack you'd like included cleaned beforehand will help them look their best in the finished photographs.

Dogs are a little different. They don't necessarily need to be freshly bathed or groomed, particularly if doing so changes how they normally look. A freshly washed and blow-dried coat can sometimes sit very differently from your dog's everyday appearance.

What matters most is that they look like your dog. A good brush, clean eyes and face, and removing any obvious dirt is often all that's needed.

If your dog is due a professional groom anyway, I'd usually recommend allowing a little time between the groom and photography session so their coat has had chance to settle back into its natural shape.

And don't worry about a little mud appearing during the session. Dogs have a remarkable ability to find it.

Where do photography sessions take place?

Most sessions take place outdoors at a location chosen to suit you, your animal and the kind of photographs you'd like to create.

That might be woodland, open countryside, somewhere you regularly walk together or another meaningful location.

We'll discuss suitable options before your session.

What happens if the weather is bad?

A little cloud, wind or even light rain doesn't necessarily mean we need to cancel. Different weather can create some beautiful photographs.

If conditions are likely to make the session uncomfortable, unsafe or simply unsuitable for the photographs we're planning, we'll rearrange.

How long does a session take?

It depends on the type of session, but I don't work to the assumption that your pet will cooperate perfectly from the first minute.

There is time for exploring, settling in, changing locations and taking breaks when they're needed. The aim is to create a relaxed experience rather than race through a checklist of photographs.

What should I bring?

Your dog's usual lead, some favourite treats and anything you know will help get their attention are useful.

For animals with particular needs, bring whatever normally helps them feel comfortable and secure. I'll discuss anything specific with you before the shoot.

What should I wear if I'm going to be photographed?

Wear something that feels like you and that you're comfortable moving around in.

Neutral colours, natural textures and relatively simple clothing tend to photograph beautifully outdoors. I'd usually avoid very large logos, prominent branding or extremely busy patterns because they can draw attention away from you and your animal.

Will leads be visible in the photographs?

If your dog needs to remain on a lead, they should. I would never recommend removing one simply for the sake of a photograph.

Where appropriate, distracting elements may be removed during the editing process, but this depends on the individual image.

Do you heavily edit the photographs?

Every final photograph is professionally edited in my style, including adjustments to colour, tone, light and composition where needed.

I want your photographs to feel polished while still looking natural and recognisably like the moment we actually experienced.

How do I receive my photographs?

Your finished images are delivered through a private online gallery where you can view and select your photographs according to the package you've booked.

Full delivery details and expected turnaround will be explained when you book.

Do you offer video as well as photography?

Yes. My background is in both photography and filmmaking. Video can be a beautiful way of capturing movement, personality and the small interactions that still photographs can't always show.

Do you offer video editing and post-production?

Yes. As well as filming my own projects, I offer professional video editing and post-production for businesses, agencies, videographers and other content creators.

If you already have footage, I can work with your existing material to shape it into a polished finished film. This can include selecting and assembling footage, structuring the story, pacing, colour correction, sound, music and preparing content for its intended platform.

My background in filmmaking means I approach editing as more than simply putting clips together. Good editing is about finding the story within the footage and creating a finished piece that feels deliberate, engaging and cohesive.

I can work on standalone editing projects as well as providing photography, filming and editing as part of a wider project.

Do you offer headshots and branding for animal professionals?

Yes. I offer natural headshots and outdoor branding portraits for individuals and animal professionals who want professional imagery that still feels relaxed and like them.

For dog trainers, dog walkers, equine professionals, riding instructors, farriers and other animal-based or rural businesses, sessions can include portraits alongside the animals you work with, bringing you and your profession together naturally.

Outdoor branding sessions take place outdoors, in natural surroundings. Please get in touch to discuss what you have in mind.

Can I use my headshots and branding portraits on my website and social media?

Yes. Headshots and outdoor branding sessions create polished photographs for websites, social media and professional profiles, without the feel of a traditional commercial shoot.

Do you cover dog sports, equestrian events and other outdoor pet events?

Yes. I offer both photography and videography for dog sports, equestrian events and other outdoor animal events.

I have experience photographing and filming both canine and equine activities, capturing everything from the action itself to the quieter moments between animals, competitors and spectators.

Whether you're organising a dog show, canine sporting event, equestrian competition, horse show or another outdoor pet event, coverage can be tailored to what you need. This might include action photography, event highlights, individual competitors, behind-the-scenes moments and video content.

I'm based across Cheshire and South Birmingham and can travel for suitable events across the surrounding areas and further afield.

Do you photograph wildlife and nature?

Yes. Wildlife and the natural world form an important part of my wider photographic work and influence the way I approach all of my photography: patiently, quietly and with an emphasis on observing rather than controlling what's happening in front of me.

You can see a selection of this work in my portfolio.

Where are you based and how far do you travel?

I'm based across Cheshire and South Birmingham, with photography sessions available in both areas as well as surrounding locations.

If you have a particular location in mind, please include it when you enquire. I'm also happy to travel further afield for suitable sessions and projects, with any applicable travel costs agreed before booking.

How do I book?

Send me an enquiry with a little information about you, your pet or the project you have in mind.

You don't need to arrive with a fully formed idea. We can talk through what you'd like to capture and work out the right kind of session from there.
